In a significant move to bolster collaboration within the cashew industry, the Cashew Nuts Association of Cambodia (CAC), one of the world’s largest producers, has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the African Cashew Alliance (ACA). This partnership aims to enhance cashew cultivation's growth and market reach, marking a promising step forward in the global sector.
Suy Kokthean, vice-president of the CAC, emphasized the importance of the agreement, highlighting its objective to promote cooperation between the parties. Through the MoU, there will be an exchange of studies on cashew cultivation between Africa and Cambodia, facilitating access to farms and processing facilities in both regions. Moreover, participation in forums and conferences will be encouraged, fostering a deeper understanding of techniques vital for supplying cashew nuts to processing countries.
At the recently concluded World Cashew Conference in Siem Reap province, delegates witnessed firsthand the quality and variety of Cambodian cashews. Kokthean noted a significant shift from previous conferences, where participants were merely aware of Cambodia's cashew reputation. This year, over 500 delegates from 40 countries were impressed by Cambodian cashew varieties with large, high-quality seeds, indicating a growing interest in Cambodia's cashew sector.
Cambodia currently holds approximately 20% of the world's raw cashew market share, trailing behind Ivory Coast and India. Pen Sovicheat, spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce, highlighted the importance of showcasing Cambodian cashews globally. The country's cashew cultivation spans over 472,946 hectares, yielding 709,419 tonnes in 2023. Last year alone, Cambodia exported around 656,000 tonnes of raw cashew to various countries, with processed cashew nuts reaching markets in China, the Czech Republic, Japan, South Korea, the Netherlands, Vietnam, and the US.
The symposium served as a platform to discuss and share experiences in promoting the cashew sector, finding markets, organizing exhibitions, and building a global cashew network. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries acknowledges the pivotal role of such conferences in highlighting Cambodia's potential in the cashew industry. With increasing international interest and investments, Cambodia's cashew sector is poised for significant growth and development in the coming years.
The MoU between the CAC and ACA signifies a crucial step towards fostering collaboration and growth within the global cashew industry. As Cambodia continues to showcase its quality cashew varieties and expand its market reach, the future looks promising for both Cambodian cashew growers and the global cashew market as a whole.
