Minister of Environment's Clean-Up Campaign Targets Tonle Sap Lake

In a bid to preserve Cambodia's precious ecosystem, Minister of Environment Eang Sophalleth is set to spearhead a comprehensive clean-up endeavor aimed at Tonle Sap Lake, starting next month.

The initiative, prompted by concerns over the lake's dwindling fish population, seeks to safeguard a vital food source for Cambodian citizens.

During a recent meeting, Minister Sophalleth discussed strategies for the campaign's success, including collaboration with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

Eda Kraja, UNOPS's Country Manager for Cambodia and Laos, highlighted the importance of aligning efforts with the Circular Strategy on Environment 2023-2028 to maximize impact.

Kraja emphasized the potential for linking priority projects with global initiatives while working closely with partners like the Green Climate Fund and the UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre.

The Circular Strategy on Environment aims to transform Cambodia into a carbon-neutral entity by 2050, emphasizing renewable energy and environmental resilience.

Minister Sophalleth expressed gratitude to development partners for their contributions to Cambodia's environmental sector, citing successes in plastic reduction and waste management.

He stressed the importance of collective action in ensuring cleanliness across all facets of Cambodian life and extending this ethos to neighboring nations.

In addition to the clean-up campaign, the Ministry has launched the Green Destination Target Project, focusing on sustainable entrepreneurship.

Communities will be empowered to offer ecotourism services, generating income while preserving local ecosystems.

Sophalleth discussed with Thuon Sinan, President of PATA Cambodia, the importance of improving community livelihoods through projects like the establishment of a meditation center in Koh Kong province.

This aligns with the Ministry's strategy of promoting ecotourism and protecting natural resources.

Minister Sophalleth reaffirmed the Ministry's commitment to cleanliness, green initiatives, and community well-being, emphasizing fair pricing for agricultural products and prioritizing consumer health.

With these initiatives, Cambodia aims to not only preserve its natural beauty but also foster sustainable development for future generations.
