In a groundbreaking restoration effort at Cambodia's Bayon temple, a treasure trove of over 400 displaced stones has been unearthed in the southwest corner. These stones believed to originate from various parts of the temple, are now under the keen scrutiny of experts from the APSARA Authority. The ongoing analysis aims not only to understand the stones' original locations but also to integrate them seamlessly into the temple's ongoing restoration.

Renowned for its architectural and cultural significance, Bayon temple has long fascinated historians and experts. Recent discoveries include stones from the temple's second gallery and the iconic four-faced Brahma sculptures in the southwest corner. Nhok Lo, a stone expert with the APSARA Authority, sheds light on the diverse range of stones found, from elements of the four-faced Brahma's eyebrows to the crucial Diamond Pillars and Ho Cheang stones, all pivotal to the temple's structure and aesthetic.

The uncovering extends to fallen stone carvings from the 27th Brahma sculpture, adding layers to the temple's narrative of preservation and restoration challenges. The team's meticulous approach involves categorizing and relocating identifiable stones for reassembly. Unidentified stones are isolated for further examination, emphasizing a commitment to detail.

Meng Sovanlylin, the project's architect and manager, underscores the systematic process. The team, before addressing collapsed structures and enhancing the drainage system, catalogs and moves each stone based on type. The overarching goal of the team is to pinpoint the original placement of each stone, aspiring to recreate the temple's historical context.
