In a collaborative effort between the World Monument Fund of the United States and the APSARA National Authority, significant strides have been made in the restoration of Phnom Bakheng Temple, a historical marvel nestled in the heart of Yaśodharapura. The focus has now shifted towards the southern staircase and western wall after the successful completion of the restoration work on the eastern and northern sections.

According to Cheam Phally, an esteemed architect and project coordinator with the World Monument Fund, restoration work on the southern staircase and wall has already reached the halfway mark, with an anticipated completion date set for December 2027. However, the journey towards restoration has not been without its challenges.

Phally emphasizes that Phnom Bakheng Temple, like many ancient structures, bears the scars of time. Factors such as aging, encroaching tree roots, adverse weather conditions, and water erosion have contributed to the gradual deterioration of the temple's structural integrity. The southern staircase and the central western wall, integral components of the temple's design, are particularly vulnerable to crumbling and cracking.

A dedicated technical team is currently engaged in the meticulous process of dismantling the deteriorated staircase and laying the groundwork for its reconstruction. The use of modern techniques and materials is paramount in ensuring the longevity and stability of the restored structure. Additionally, adherence to the Angkor Charter, established by the International Committee for the Coordination of Protection and Development of Angkor, guides the reinforcement efforts for the temple's walls.
