In a significant development, the United States has cemented its position as the leading purchaser of Cambodian exports, with transactions soaring to nearly $630 million in the initial month of 2024. This figure represents approximately one-third of Cambodia's total exports to the global market, according to reports from the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE).
H2: Boost in Exports to US Driven by Diplomatic Relations and Economic Growth
Lim Heng, vice-president of the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce (CCC), underscored the pivotal role played by improved political relations and the expansion of the global economy in propelling the surge in Cambodia's exports, particularly to key markets such as the US, China, Vietnam, and Japan.
"The US, serving as the Kingdom's largest export market, demonstrates a robust appetite for Cambodian goods, primarily in clothing, footwear, bags, and select agricultural products," Heng remarked.
H2: Strategic Partnerships and Preferential Tariffs Bolster Trade Relations
Highlighting the significance of the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) agreement, which extends preferential tariffs to Cambodian goods, Heng emphasized its contribution to facilitating exports to the US. He further noted that the enhancement of diplomatic ties and product diversification have been instrumental in nurturing a conducive environment for burgeoning trade volumes between the two nations.
During a bilateral meeting in September 2023, US Ambassador to Cambodia W. Patrick Murphy and Minister of Commerce Cham Nimul deliberated on strategies to further bolster trade ties. Cambodia's appeal to US companies to ramp up orders and investments was a focal point of the discussions, aimed at fostering mutual economic growth.
H2: Prime Minister Hun Manet Advocates for Stronger Bilateral Cooperation
At the US-Cambodia Business Forum held in New York, Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized the symbiotic nature of the bilateral relationship, citing Cambodia's strategic location and burgeoning manufacturing sector as key attractions for US investors.
"One eyewitness is better than one hundred hearsays," Manet remarked, urging potential investors to explore Cambodia's vast potential firsthand. He pledged unwavering governmental support for collaboration and business expansion initiatives, reaffirming a commitment to addressing pertinent challenges in intellectual property rights to fortify the private sector.
H2: Trade Dynamics and Future Outlook
The General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE) reported a total trade volume of $9.15 billion between the US and Cambodia in 2023, despite a slight decrease of 1.4% from the previous year. While Cambodian exports to the US experienced a marginal decline, the trade surplus expanded, underlining the resilience of the bilateral economic relationship.
As Cambodia's second-largest international trading partner, the US continues to play a pivotal role in the Kingdom's economic landscape, accounting for nearly one-fifth of its total international trade volume. With diplomatic ties strengthening and trade dynamics evolving, prospects for further growth and collaboration between the two nations remain promising.
