In a concerted effort to combat a looming water crisis, the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, alongside other relevant ministries and local authorities, has been tirelessly working to alleviate the strain on Cambodian rice fields.
As the dry season of 2023-2024 persists, the Royal Government's initial plan to cultivate 500,000 hectares of dry season rice has been overshadowed by unexpected challenges. Recent reports indicate that farmers have expanded cultivation to nearly 800,000 hectares as of February 14, 2024.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has taken a proactive stance on the issue. In a message conveyed via telegram, he acknowledged the varying stages of cultivation across the affected areas. He emphasized the urgency of addressing water shortages to safeguard rice yields.
Responding to the Prime Minister's directive, the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, in coordination with relevant ministries and local authorities, has initiated a comprehensive intervention strategy. The primary focus is to ensure adequate water supply for rice fields facing imminent threats.
Authorities have strategically deployed pumping operations in provinces bearing the brunt of the water scarcity. Kampot, Takeo, Kandal, Kampong Chhnang, Pursat, Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Pailin, Kampong Thom, Prey Veng, Svay Rieng, Kampong Speu, and Kampong Cham provinces are among those receiving immediate attention.
Beyond governmental efforts, community engagement plays a pivotal role in addressing the crisis. Local authorities are collaborating with farmers to implement water-saving techniques and optimize irrigation practices to maximize efficiency.
