Cambodian-Korean Labor Cooperation Strengthens in Recent Ministerial Meeting

Heng Sour, Cambodia's Minister of Labor and Vocational Training, engaged in a pivotal discussion with Lee Jung Sik, Minister of Labor and Employment of the Republic of Korea, aiming to bolster collaboration in labor and vocational training. The meeting, held on March 8, 2024, in Korea, underscored the shared commitment towards enhancing opportunities and skill development for both nations.

During the interaction, Sour expressed gratitude towards Lee Jung Sik for his dedication to fostering labor cooperation and vocational training initiatives. Notably, the discussion delved into the collaborative efforts surrounding the employment of workers facilitated by the work permit system, initiated in 2006.

Sour emphasized the significance of the work permit system in enabling Cambodian workers to secure substantial incomes, vital for sustaining their families. Furthermore, the system provides a platform for workers to acquire valuable experience and expertise, essential for Cambodia's future development endeavors.

In addition to deliberating on worker placement programs, Sour urged for enhanced coordination regarding the Skills Workers Program (E-7), proposing its advancement over the existing E-9 program. Moreover, he advocated for exploring avenues to reinforce cooperation between Korean and Cambodian agencies in key sectors such as occupational safety and vocational education.

The meeting underscored Korea's continued commitment to providing employment opportunities for Cambodian workers seeking opportunities abroad. Collaborative efforts aim not only at facilitating employment but also at fostering mutual growth and development through joint initiatives.

Acknowledging Cambodia's responsible and timely approach to sending workers, Lee Jung Sik commended the diligence and integrity exhibited by Cambodian laborers. Such commendable attributes have led to increased quotas for Cambodian workers in 2024, reflecting the trust and confidence of the Korean government.

Looking ahead, both ministers affirmed their dedication to expediting cooperation in response to mutual interests and needs. Lee Jung Sik assured prompt consideration of Cambodia's requests, highlighting the value of effective collaboration between ministries and relevant institutions.

In conclusion, the ministerial meeting signifies a pivotal step towards strengthening bilateral ties and fostering shared prosperity between Cambodia and Korea. As both nations commit to nurturing skilled labor forces and promoting cooperation, the path toward sustainable development and mutual benefit becomes increasingly promising.
