Cambodia is witnessing a remarkable surge in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, with the latest report from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport revealing that the country registered 604 new EVs in 2023. This brings the total number of EVs in the Southeast Asian nation to 1,335, marking a significant stride towards sustainable transportation solutions.
In recent years, EVs have gained notable traction in Cambodia. From a mere five registrations in 2020, the numbers surged to 663 in 2022, reflecting a growing awareness and acceptance of EV technology among Cambodian consumers.
Despite the exponential growth in EV ownership, infrastructure remains a crucial aspect of fostering further adoption. Currently, Cambodia boasts 18 EV charging stations spread across strategic locations nationwide, facilitating convenient charging for EV owners.
Moeurng Sokmeng, a sales supervisor at Mingyang Guoji Co., Ltd., expressed optimism regarding consumer interest in EVs. She noted a significant increase in consumer awareness about the benefits of EVs, attributing it to the rising environmental consciousness among the populace.
Udom Pisey, an EV manager at Car4you Co., Ltd., emphasized the cost-efficiency and environmental advantages of EVs. With fewer moving parts compared to traditional combustion engine vehicles, EVs offer lower maintenance and repair costs, making them an attractive long-term investment for consumers.
The Cambodian government has been proactive in promoting EV adoption as part of its environmental sustainability agenda. To incentivize consumers, import duties on EVs were slashed by approximately 50 percent in 2021, significantly reducing the cost barrier associated with purchasing EVs.
With a vision towards a greener future, Cambodia has set ambitious targets to combat carbon emissions. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport aims to have 40 percent of vehicles on the roads being EVs and 70 percent of motorcycles being electric by 2050, aligning with global efforts to mitigate climate change.
In conclusion, Cambodia's EV revolution is not only gaining momentum but also shaping the country's transportation landscape towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly direction. With supportive government policies, increasing consumer interest, and expanding infrastructure, Cambodia is poised to emerge as a leader in the Southeast Asian EV market.
