In a significant move aimed at bolstering Cambodia's infrastructure, the Focus Consortium, in collaboration with the State Secretariat for Civil Aviation (SSCA), has initiated a comprehensive feasibility study for the proposed Mondulkiri airport and the concurrent development of satellite cities within the province.
The authorization for these pivotal projects was granted to the consortium back in January, marking the commencement of a strategic partnership between the private sector and government entities in Cambodia.
SSCA, working hand in hand with the Focus Consortium, is diligently adhering to the regulatory frameworks and procedural guidelines set forth in Cambodia. Sin Chansereyvutha, the Under-Secretary of State for SSCA, underscored the importance of this collaborative effort, emphasizing the adherence to legal protocols.
"Presently, the consortium is actively engaged with SSCA in conducting an in-depth feasibility analysis for both initiatives," remarked Chansereyvutha, highlighting the meticulous nature of the ongoing study.
The exact financial implications of these ambitious ventures can only be gauged upon the completion of the feasibility study, Chansereyvutha noted, indicating the complexity and scale of the projects at hand.
The consortium secured rights in January to explore and invest in the Mondulkiri airport project under the Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) framework, alongside a parallel endeavor aimed at establishing a versatile satellite city within the province.
Comprising investors from Cambodia, Malaysia, China, Europe, and the Middle East, the Focus Group represents a multinational collaboration with a vested interest in Cambodia's developmental landscape.
The success of the Mondulkiri airport project and the subsequent development of satellite cities hinges on the outcome of the ongoing feasibility study, Chansereyvutha emphasized.
"Should the consortium determine the viability of these ventures, it will mark a significant stride towards securing the necessary investments," he affirmed, underlining the pivotal role of feasibility assessments in project development.
Prior attempts by China Power to conduct a feasibility study for the Mondulkiri airport project were thwarted by the disruptive impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, underscoring the challenges faced by large-scale infrastructure initiatives amid global uncertainties.
Originally slated for a 300-hectare expanse approximately 20 kilometers from Sen Monorom city, the Mondulkiri airport project was estimated to exceed $80 million in costs before the onset of the pandemic-induced setbacks.
The Mondulkiri airport project aligns with Cambodia's strategic vision of enhancing flight connectivity between key tourism destinations globally while fortifying the nation's tourism infrastructure, as outlined by SSCA.
In addition to the Mondulkiri endeavor, the Royal Government of Cambodia has proposed the construction of an airport on Koh Rong Island, situated off the coast of Preah Sihanouk province, further underscoring the nation's commitment to aviation expansion.
With three international airports currently operational and two new airports underway in Kandal, Takeo, and Koh Kong provinces respectively, Cambodia is poised to bolster its aviation sector significantly, signaling a transformative phase in the nation's infrastructure development agenda.
