In a recent report unveiled by the General Department of Immigration, it has been disclosed that a significant number of foreign nationals have been deported from Cambodia due to their involvement in criminal activities. The report, presented during a meeting to evaluate the department's performance in 2023 and outline plans for 2024, highlighted the expulsion of 2,159 individuals for various offenses.

According to the report, the deported foreign offenders represented 39 different nationalities, with the majority originating from China. Among the prominent nationalities were Indonesians, Vietnamese, Thais, Indians, and Japanese, among others. The figures underscore the diverse demographic of individuals engaging in criminal activities within Cambodia's borders.

Since its inception in 2014, the General Department of Immigration has deported a staggering 27,738 illegal foreigners hailing from 107 different countries. This indicates a persistent effort by Cambodian authorities to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of its citizens and residents.

As of December 2023, a total of 2,246 foreigners were incarcerated across the nation, with a notable proportion being women. The imprisoned individuals represented 46 different nationalities, with Vietnamese and Chinese nationals comprising the majority. The statistics provide insight into the demographics of foreign nationals involved in criminal activities within Cambodia.

The report also shed light on the presence of refugees and asylum seekers within Cambodia, with a total of 74 individuals identified. Among them, 36 cases were granted refugee status, while 6 cases were categorized as asylum seekers. The collaboration between the General Department of Immigration, JRS, UNHCR, and the Asian Foundation aims to ensure the welfare and documentation of these individuals.

In collaboration with humanitarian organizations, the General Department of Immigration has taken proactive measures to assess the living conditions of refugees and asylum seekers. This includes the distribution of essential items and the facilitation of documentation processes to improve their quality of life and legal status in Cambodia.

The recent report by the General Department of Immigration underscores Cambodia's commitment to addressing transnational crimes and safeguarding its borders.
