In a significant move for Cambodia's agricultural sector, a Japanese company has committed over $1 million to establish a new cashew processing facility in Kampong Thom province. This investment aims to bolster the province's cashew exports to international markets.
Touch BunHour, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, revealed this development during a ceremony marking the commencement of construction for the Japanese-owned cashew processing plant in Kampong Svay District.
Highlighting the importance of this investment, BunHour emphasized Kampong Thom's potential as a hub for agro-industrial crops, particularly cashews. He noted that the lack of processing infrastructure has hindered Cambodia's ability to export processed cashew nuts.
Deputy Governor Prem Ratha echoed BunHour's sentiments, underlining Kampong Thom's suitability for cultivating various crops including rubber, mango, and cashew. With cashew crops covering nearly 150,000 hectares, the province demonstrates promising agricultural prospects.
Kentaro Taniguchi, President of Mirat Agritech Company, detailed the project's scope, disclosing that the cashew processing plant spans 58 meters by 20 meters. Equipped with advanced production machinery capable of processing 10 tons of cashews daily, the facility is poised to significantly enhance cashew processing capabilities in the region.
In a show of commitment to local stakeholders, the Japanese company solidified partnerships with 10 communities from Preah Vihear and Kampong Thom provinces during the groundbreaking ceremony. This move underscores the company's dedication to fostering positive relationships within the communities it operates.
The establishment of the cashew processing plant is expected to yield far-reaching economic benefits for Kampong Thom province and Cambodia at large. With increased capacity for processing and exporting cashew nuts, the region stands to capitalize on the growing demand for this popular commodity in international markets.
The Japanese company's investment signifies a significant milestone in Cambodia's agricultural development, particularly in the cashew sector. As construction progresses and operations commence at the new processing plant, Kampong Thom province is poised to emerge as a key player in the global cashew market, driving economic growth and prosperity for the region.
