Cambodian Rice Federation Enhances Export Opportunities in Malaysia

In a bid to bolster Cambodian rice exports to Malaysia, the Cambodian Rice Federation, in collaboration with the Cambodian Embassy in Malaysia, conducted a significant solidarity visit to a Malaysian state-owned company. Led by Duke Chan Sokheang, President of the Cambodian Rice Federation, the delegation aimed to explore avenues for expanding the export potential of Cambodian rice in Malaysia.

The visit, which occurred on April 29, 2024, in Malaysia, witnessed the participation of key figures including Mr. Ouk Chandara, Ambassador of Cambodia to Malaysia, and Mr. Vith Panha, Cambodian Deputy Trade Representative to Malaysia. A delegation comprising 16 members from 10 companies was led to engage with Padiberas Nasional Bhd (BERNAS), a prominent import-export entity in Malaysia, exclusive in its dealings with rice.

Malaysia, a significant importer of Cambodian rice, has shown consistent growth in its demand. With an annual export volume exceeding 50,000 tonnes, comprising primarily fragrant rice variants such as Romduol rice and fragrant rice, the country has become a key market for Cambodian rice producers.

During the visit, Malaysian authorities lauded the quality of Cambodian rice, highlighting its increasing popularity among Malaysian consumers. The average annual growth rate of Cambodian rice in Malaysia has surpassed 10%, indicating a growing preference for its distinct varieties.

In 2023 alone, Malaysia imported approximately 51,184 tons of Cambodian rice, valued at over 36 million US dollars. This robust trade relationship places Cambodia as the fifth largest importer to Malaysia among twelve countries, signifying the importance of rice trade between the two nations.

Acknowledging the preferences of the Malaysian market, both sides emphasized the importance of producing rice varieties tailored to Malaysian tastes. Malaysian officials encouraged Cambodia to increase production of rice variants like fragrant rice and rhododendrons, which have garnered favor among Malaysian consumers.

Looking ahead, Malaysia has pledged to facilitate visits by rice importers to Cambodian rice mills, particularly during the second season of non-seasonal rice harvest in September. This commitment underscores the mutual interest in furthering trade relations and exploring opportunities for collaboration in the rice industry.

In conclusion, the solidarity visit between the Cambodian Rice Federation and Malaysian counterparts marks a pivotal step towards strengthening bilateral trade ties and expanding the export footprint of Cambodian rice in Malaysia. With concerted efforts and mutual cooperation, both nations are poised to capitalize on the growing demand for quality rice products in the Malaysian market.
