Revamping Kampot Tourist Port: AZ Builders Granted Tender

In a strategic move by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, AZ Builders secures the bid to revitalize the Kampot tourist port, lying dormant since its construction began in 2022. The Cambodian AZ Group's subsidiary, AZ Builders, pledges an investment ranging from $5 million to $10 million for the port's resurrection, focusing on dredging and widening the waterway to accommodate vessels.

During a recent press briefing, Minister Peng Po Na announced the government's intent to finalize the agreement with AZ Builders by the second quarter of 2024. Anticipating a temporary operational phase by the third quarter of this year, the official inauguration is slated for year-end, marking a pivotal moment for Kampot's tourism prospects.

Initially funded by a substantial loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the port's neglect surfaced during a recent public forum led by Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol. Shallow waters impede docking, a critical oversight in the project's planning phase. However, government spokesperson Pen Bona assures the public of forthcoming efforts to rectify these deficiencies, prioritizing sustainability and safety.

Nestled in the Teuk Chhou district, Kampot province, the tourist port holds strategic significance, flanked by renowned attractions like Bokor Mountain and Koh Tonsay. This development aims to bridge Cambodia's tourist hotspots with international destinations, leveraging the country's 30 coastal ports and beaches. Despite abundant potential, Cambodia's waterway tourism remains underexploited.

The rejuvenation of the Kampot tourist port signals a paradigm shift in Cambodia's tourism landscape. AZ Builders' commitment underscores the government's determination to harness untapped potential, fostering economic growth and cultural exchange. As construction commences, anticipation mounts for the port's transformation into a vibrant hub, beckoning tourists from far and wide.

With meticulous planning and private sector collaboration, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport embarks on a journey to revitalize Kampot's dormant gem. Beyond mere infrastructure development, this endeavor symbolizes Cambodia's unwavering resolve to embrace progress while preserving its rich heritage. As the Kampot tourist port prepares for a new chapter, it stands poised to emerge as a beacon of prosperity and connectivity in the region.
