Mr. Tep Asarith, Undersecretary of State and Spokesperson for Cambodia’s Ministry of Information |
Mr. Tep Asarith, Undersecretary of State and Spokesperson for Cambodia’s Ministry of Information, issued a reminder to journalists and media organizations on the paramount importance of delivering accurate and truthful information. Emphasizing a commitment to professional ethics, he underscored that credibility and public trust hinge on journalistic integrity.
Speaking at a conference held in Phnom Penh on October 31, 2024, Mr. Asarith presided over discussions centered on “Confidence in the Cambodian Press: Ethical Press for the Public Good.” Supported by UNESCO and attended by diplomatic and development partners along with approximately 150 stakeholders, the event highlighted the shared responsibility of the media to uphold ethical standards.
In his remarks, Mr. Asarith expressed appreciation for the diligent efforts of Cambodian journalists who leverage their knowledge and expertise to produce and broadcast responsible content. Their work, he noted, plays a critical role in shaping Cambodia’s evolving information and audiovisual sectors.
He stated, "The Ministry of Information, as part of the Royal Government, has taken steps to elevate journalism in Cambodia. Journalists serve as vital partners in the nation's socio-economic progress, playing a crucial role in informing, educating, and entertaining the public with responsibility and integrity.”
In the digital age, he explained, ethical journalism remains essential. By maintaining high standards, journalists become reliable sources that help the public discern fact from misinformation. This role is even more critical as the digital landscape accelerates the spread of content, including false information. Today, digital platforms like Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube circulate information more quickly than traditional media outlets such as newspapers, radio, and television, creating both opportunities and challenges.
Highlighting the government’s response, Mr. Asarith referenced ongoing initiatives led by Minister of Information, Mr. Neth Pheaktra. Through reform and collaboration with public and private entities, the Ministry aims to reinforce the credibility of Cambodian media. This approach includes ensuring that press standards evolve in step with Cambodia’s digital transformation, so the public can rely on journalism as a trustworthy source in a rapidly changing media landscape.
