On October 29, 2024, the National Police Commissioner's Response Team, known as the IOC, received an urgent intervention request from the families of Korean youths. The request specifically focused on CHOI TAEWON, a young individual with passport number M47223117, reported to be confined in Cambodia's Kandal province.
Acting swiftly, the Kandal Provincial Police, as confirmed by a Fresh News press release dated November 1, 2024, began their search for Mr. Choi based on family-provided information. The investigation led them to discover him residing freely in a special economic zone located within Sampov Poun commune, Sampov Poun city, Kandal province. The police found no signs of any form of detention, mistreatment, or restriction.
Through his account, Mr. Choi clarified that he had traveled to Cambodia in search of well-paying job opportunities. He confirmed he had secured employment in this area, where he was provided with sufficient lodging, meals, and unrestricted freedom of movement. However, due to an apparent lapse in communication with his family back in Korea, they misunderstood his circumstances and assumed he was in need of intervention.
“From the details gathered in this case,” the police report continues, “there is no basis to suspect any illegal confinement or maltreatment.” Despite the family’s concerns, the investigation concluded that Choi’s lack of communication led to an unintended misunderstanding. Consequently, the incident resulted in confusion that impacted national and international public perception.
Following this inquiry, Cambodian authorities resolved to deport Mr. Choi. He will be transferred to the General Department of Immigration to formalize his deportation process, alongside a prohibition on future re-entry into Cambodia.
