Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI) is poised to significantly enhance its international connectivity as three more airlines have confirmed their plans to launch direct flights to the province, home to the world-renowned Angkor Wat temple complex.
Domestic carrier Sky Angkor Airlines will commence direct flights between Siem Reap and Incheon, South Korea, in December 2023. Additionally, Seoul-based Asiana Airlines is set to launch direct flights from Incheon to Siem Reap by the end of the year.
India's leading low-cost carrier, IndiGo, will join the route in February 2024, offering direct flights to Siem Reap. With these new additions, Siem Reap will be more accessible to international travelers than ever before.
In late October, Thai Airways and AirAsia Thailand began operating scheduled flights from Bangkok and Phuket to Siem Reap, respectively.
SAI, a state-of-the-art international airport capable of handling long-haul flights, commenced operations in October 2022. With a 3,600-meter runway and 38 berths, the $1.1 billion airport can accommodate up to seven million passengers annually, with the capacity to increase to 12 million by 2040.
In its first year of operation, SAI welcomed over 1.3 million passengers. Mao Havannall, Minister in charge of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, praised the airport's contribution to the aviation and tourism sectors in Siem Reap province.
To encourage new routes and airline operations, SAI Operators is offering discounts on terminal and operational fees.
With these developments, Siem Reap's popularity as a tourist destination is expected to soar. The Angkor Archaeological Park alone received 699,850 international visitors in the first nine months of 2023, a 29.7% increase compared to the same period in 2022.
